Boxing manager Frank Espinoza has said they have big plans in store for Abner Mares, but a rematch with Vic Darchinyan is not part of those plans. Espinoza told reporter Charles Winter that Mares and his team are going to wait for an updated report on the medical status of IBF bantamweight champion Joseph Agbeko.

Mares was scheduled to face Agbeko last Saturday in California. A few days before the fight, Agbeko collapsed from Sudden Onset Sciatica and the fight with Mares was canceled. Their meeting was the final bout of the bantamweight tournament being televised by the Showtime network. Darchinyan's co-featured fight with Yonnhy Perez was pushed to the main event position. Darchinyan won an impressive five round techincal decision.

Darchinyan's promoter Gary Shaw has called for an interim-IBF title bout between his fighter and Mares. If Agbeko's medical condition forces him to vacate the belt, Espinoza says Mares has other options.

"We'll wait what happens with Agbeko and if he vacates the IBF bantamweight title, we have other plans for Abner," Espinoza said.
