Gilberto Ramirez was just as disappointed as many boxing fans who felt the third fight between Canelo Alvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin was something of a letdown.

The 175-pound contender from Mexico praised his countryman Alvarez but had terser words for the Kazakh puncher, who ended up losing a unanimous decision last Saturday night at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas to end one of contemporary boxing’s storied rivalries. This time, unlike the first two fights, there was no controversy about the outcome. Alvarez, who successfully defended his four super middleweight titles, won by scorecards that read 115-113 twice and 116-112, tallies that many observers believe was too generous to Golovkin.

“I think Canelo, he did well,” Ramirez told FightHype.com. “He did everything he could in the ring, but I don’t think GGG, he deserves to fight again with Canelo because he didn’t [do] enough. It was kind of sad for all the fans because they were expecting a fight like their first two fights. They were expecting kind of like that fight, but he (Golovkin) didn’t do anything.”

The first fight between Alvarez and Golovkin, in 2017, ended in a controversial draw that many people believed Golovkin had deserved to win. The second fight, in 2018, saw Alvarez win a competitive fight on the cards—but even then, some observers felt Golovkin deserved the nod.

The third fight on Saturday, however, was far less competitive. A noticeably quicker Alvarez controlled the action while Golovkin failed to kickstart his offense until the late rounds. By then the fight had already somewhat rote.

“For me, he did well,” Ramirez said of Alvarez. “He pressured all the time and tried to win every single round. That’s it. Triple G, he didn’t do enough. He just tried to survive the whole fight.”

Ramirez (44-0, 30 KOs), a former titlist at 168, is gearing up for a significant fight himself, a 175-pound title fight against WBA champion Dmitry Bivol (20-0, 11 KOs) Nov. 5 in Abu Dhabi.
