The heir to the throne of Puerto Rico, lightweight contender Felix Verdejo (17-0, 13KOs), makes his HBO televised debut from the The Theatre at New York's Madison Square Garden. He faces fellow unbeaten Ivan Najera (16-0, 8KOs).

Verdejo is following in the footsteps of countrymen Felix Trinidad and Miguel Cotto, by fighting on eve of the national Puerto Rican parade.

Verdejo has been groomed for this moment as he has headlined shows in his native Puerto Rico. So while it’s a grand opportunity, he is already accustomed to the bright lights.

“This is my second time fighting on the eve of the parade,” Verdejo said to BoxingScene.com through his interpreter Gardy Lopez. “I’ve done this before and there really is no pressure. I’m prepared and I worked very hard for this and I’m here to give a spectacle to the people of Puerto Rico.”

Should Verdejo win, he could be in line for a title fight at the end of the year. While it’s a great honor, Verdejo is taking it in stride and will be ready when the time comes.

“It’s extraordinary for me because we don’t have many champions,” the young prospect said. “I’m working for that time when it comes and we’ll be ready.”

While Cotto is still the star of the island, many people compare Verdejo to his idol, Felix Trinidad. Verdejo is similar to Trinidad in terms of personality and says his comparisons to Trinidad are an honor.

“We have a good relationship. He shows me grand support, and he’s the people’s champion. Anytime I need advice he’s there and it’s an honor to be compared with him.”
