(SPOKANE, WASH.) – While the elite and senior men’s divisions enjoyed a day off on Wednesday, the elite women and youth men took over the two rings at the HUB Sports Center in Spokane, Wash., for a full day of quarterfinal competition. All of the winners in Wednesday’s USA Boxing National Championships action advanced on to semifinal round competition on Thursday.

The jam-packed women’s lightweight division opened action on Wednesday afternoon as 2012 U.S. Olympian returned to the ring in the same city where she claimed her U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Women’s Boxing title. Underwood returned in victorious fashion, defeating Maritza Guillen (Reno, Nev.) on a 3-0 unanimous decision in their quarterfinal contest. She will face former national champion Melissa Parker (Spring, Texas) on Thursday. Reigning featherweight world champion Tiara Brown (Hyattsville, Md.) and number one world ranked light welterweight Mikaela Mayer (Los Angeles, Calif.) competed in lightweight competition as well with both boxers claiming unanimous wins. Brown and Mayer will face off in semifinal round action tomorrow.

The unanimous decisions reigned supreme in Wednesday’s afternoon competition with only two of 23 early session bouts going to a split decision. The lone TKO of the day’s early action came in the youth men’s welterweight division with welterweight Timothy Lee (Las Vegas, Nev.) taking a first round TKO win over Joshua Ramirez (McKinney, Texas) in the quarterfinal match-up.

Boxers in the youth men’s flyweight, lightweight, and welterweight divisions all advanced on to semifinal round action on Thursday with their wins in Wednesday’s action. In addition to the lightweight class, women’s elite boxers in the featherweight and welterweight divisions moved on to the semifinals with their wins on Wednesday.

The quarterfinal action continued in Wednesday night’s competition with bouts in the youth males’ light flyweight, bantamweight, light welterweight and light heavyweight classes. 2012 Junior Olympic National Champion Nico Hernandez (Wichita, Kansas) opened evening competition in a light flyweight contest with Michael Aguayo (Dallas, Texas), winning a 3-0 unanimous decision. Hernandez moves on to a semifinal battle with Joshua Franco (San Antonio, Texas) on Thursday.

Also in the light flyweight division, Olympic training partner Gilbert Renteria (Houston, Texas) competed in his first USA Boxing National Championships and he won a unanimous decision victory over Conrad Rendon (Fresno, Calif.) to advance in the tournament.

Thursday will be the busiest day of the 2013 USA Boxing National Championships with the third ring at the HUB Sports Center being put into action for the first time. Every division will see action on Thursday with all of the remaining competitors who have not earned byes into Friday and Saturday’s action boxing tomorrow in a full day of bouts. The elite males will compete in quarterfinal competition on Friday with the other four divisions boxing in the semifinal round. Competition will begin at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the HUB Sports Center.
