(SPOKANE, WASH.) – While the elite and senior men’s divisions enjoyed a day off on Wednesday, the elite women and youth men took over the two rings at the HUB Sports Center in Spokane, Wash., for a full day of quarterfinal competition. All of the winners in Wednesday’s USA Boxing National Championships action advanced on to semifinal round competition on Thursday.
The jam-packed women’s lightweight division opened action on Wednesday afternoon as 2012 U.S. Olympian returned to the ring in the same city where she claimed her U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Women’s Boxing title. Underwood returned in victorious fashion, defeating Maritza Guillen (Reno, Nev.) on a 3-0 unanimous decision in their quarterfinal contest. She will face former national champion Melissa Parker (Spring, Texas) on Thursday. Reigning featherweight world champion Tiara Brown (Hyattsville, Md.) and number one world ranked light welterweight Mikaela Mayer (Los Angeles, Calif.) competed in lightweight competition as well with both boxers claiming unanimous wins.
