Former heavyweight journeyman Tor Hamer was arrested earlier this week after allegedly running from police in New Jersey, who said they later found 7.5 pounds of marijuana in Hamer’s vehicle, according to a press release from the Palisades Interstate Parkway Police.

Officers had just arrested another man at an overlook on Tuesday when they heard fireworks nearby. They went to investigate the fireworks and saw two women and a man running away. The women stopped but the man allegedly kept running, police said.

When officers caught the man — Hamer — they “detected an odor of alcohol and marijuana coming from Mr. Hamer and his clothing.  A search of his person uncovered a pack of rolling papers and a small clear bag containing P.C.P.,” the press release said.

That ultimately led to a search of Hamer’s SUV and the discovery of a duffel bag that they said had the marijuana inside.

Hamer is facing one count each of possession with intent to distribute marijuana over 5 pounds, possession of PCP, possession of marijuana over 50 grams, possession of fireworks, possession of marijuana under 50 grams, and resisting arrest by flight.

The 32-year-old turned pro in 2008 and fought until 2013, going 21-3 with 14 KOs. The losses came by split decision to Kelvin Price in 2010 and then by technical knockout to Vyacheslav Glazkov in 2012 and Andy Ruiz in 2013. In the Glazkov and Ruiz fights, Hamer essentially quit in his corner, with the ending of the Ruiz bout leading Hamer’s promoter, Lou DiBella, to announce the fighter’s release via Twitter message.
