For the most part, David Morrell is being praised as the super middleweight division's next big thing.

The superlatives used to describe him all have something in common, dominance. Next weekend, however, Sena Agbeko will step up to the plate and see what Morrell (9-0, 8 KOs) is all about.

All along, the 31-year-old has watched Morrell from a distance. Although he could’ve taken the time to bash him and his persona as nothing more than a facade, Agbeko (28-2, 22 KOs) went the other direction and admitted that his upcoming opponent is who they say he is.

“He’s good, he’s definitely good,” said Agbeko during an interview with BoxingScene.com recently. “I think he’s a complete fighter.”

For Morrell, he was hoping to land a bigger and more notable name before pulling down the curtains on his 2023.

David Benavidez ranked near the top of his list but, with the WBC interim belt holder recently nabbing a win over Demetrius Andrade, he’s firmly entrenched in the Canelo Alvarez sweepstakes. Other names such as Caleb Plant and Anthony Dirrell, want the 25-year-old to earn his stripes.

To a certain extent, Agbeko feels the same. Sure Morrell is a unique talent but the highly ranked contender isn’t getting caught up in the hype. Having rebuilt his career following a lopsided loss at the hands of Vladimir Shishkin in 2021, Agbeko is currently on a five-fight win streak, four of which came before the sound of the final bell.

In the eyes of many, Morrell will have a lengthy championship reign in the near future, something Agbeko agrees with. However, as of now, his future hasn’t started yet, and it won’t begin on Saturday night.

“He’s a good fighter with a lot of great potential,” continued Agbeko. “But at the moment, I think I’m better than him.”
