Former British lightweight champion Scotty Cardle (22-2-1, 7 KOs) has parted ways with trainer Joe Gallagher.

The 28-year-old, who made his pro debut with Matchroom and Gallagher in 2012, has lost two of his last three fights with a six-round points victory over Lee Connelly sandwiched in between. Cardle’s two-year reign as British champion ended at the hands of Robbie Barrett (MD 12), April 2017, and was then demolished in two rounds by current British 135lbs champion Lewis Ritson in March this year.

Cardle returns to action this weekend in the next instalment of Matchroom’s NXTGEN series, taking on Michael Mooney over six rounds at Cardiff’s Ice Arena in a show headlined by Joe Cordina vs Sean Dodd for the vacant Commonwealth lightweight title.

No news yet as to who will replace Gallagher in Cardle’s corner, but the fighter confirmed the split via his Instagram page saying: “After 7 years of being a part of @gallaghersboxinggym, I have decided to part with Joe & the team. It breaks my heart to leave a family like Gallaghers Gym, but to look back on my last few results, I realise I need a fresh start!

“I want to say a massive thank you to Joe for the time & effort put into me & my training, and I’m very proud of what I’ve achieved with him. And as for all the boys (& Tasha), I’ve built some great friendships & had some funny times, a bunch I’ll forever consider mates of mine!”

Gallagher, who trains Natasha Jonas (6-0, 5 KOs), will be in the corner of the WBA International Female super featherweight champion at the Ice Arena when she makes the first defence of her newly acquired strap against Viviane Obenauf (12-4, 6 KOs).
