Scott Fitzgerald has been jailed after breaking a man’s jaw in a fight.

The former British super-welterweight champion, 31, was thrown out of a pub in Preston before the incident occurred.

Fitzgerald is unbeaten in 15 fights since turning professional in the wake of winning a gold medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

But the 31-year-old’s path, last trod in May 2021 when he beat Gregory Trenel inside three rounds at Manchester’s AO Arena, has seldom been one of simplicity, summed up by the fact that he was sentenced to 46 weeks in prison for the altercation, which took place in November 2022, at the Grand Junction in Ashton-On-Ribble.

‘Fitzy’, after being ejected from the venue for “causing too much commotion” by landlady Kirsty Allen, attempted to get back inside, shouting aggressively and kicking at the door.

He was then seen throwing a punch, after “bouncing around the pub” under the influence of drink and drugs, towards another man, Leevi Francis, who had headed outside to intervene.

The punch floored Mr Francis and left him with a broken jaw and a cut below his eyebrow. Customers from the pub took him back inside and he was then escorted to the Royal Preston Hospital for treatment.

The incident is just one of a number of blotches on the once-hotly-tipped prospect’s copy book as he was arrested the day after the attack, at his home.

At the time, he claimed he had acted in self-defence but later pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm (GBH) on the first day of his trial.

After the attack, the victim had surgery to insert a metal plate in his jaw which causes him pain and wakes him up in the middle of the night and he was unable to eat solid food for a stretch causing him to lose two stone in weight.

Fitzgerald was booked into rehab and received support from Sporting Chance –– a clinic set up by former Arsenal and England star Tony Adams –– to help him overcome addictions to drink, drugs and gambling.

After leaving the centre, he was charged with three counts of common assault and one count of witness intimidation relating to an incident earlier in the year.
