Liverpool  - Liverpool’s Robbie Davies Jr won the EBU super-lightweight title while also defending the British title with a controversial decision over Joe Hughes, the latter of whom most ringsiders - including Boxingscene - scored in favour of.

Both fighters had success during a lively opener, with the switch-hitting Davies landing a number of sharp jabs and Hughes connecting with his best punch, the left-hook, one of which bloodied Hughes’ nose.

Hughes turned the pressure up, bobbing and weaving while throwing wicked left hooks at the local man, who began to look visibly uncomfortable by the end of the fourth round. In contrast, Hughes’ body language oozed confidence as he skipped to close the distance and continue his wicked body attack.

Hughes was effective not just with his left hooks but the jab, which was really starting to mark Davies’ face by the mid-rounds, as the crowd attempted to rally around the popular scouser.

Davies did rally to an extent, but it was Hughes controlling the pace and scores of 118-110, 115-113 and 115-114 for Davies looked harsh on the Wiltshire man.

Still, despite the controversial scores, the victorious Davies, who improves to 19-1, now has plenty of options in what is a red hot domestic division.
