Unbeaten contender Rey "King" Vargas, who is ranked in a top spot for the super bantamweight title of the World Boxing Council, expects to finally get his shot at gold in 2016.

The young pride of Otumba, Mexico has been a disciple of Nacho Beristain from the beginning of his pro career. He's built up an unbeaten streak of 25 professional wins, 20 of them by knockout.

The boxer is promoted by Promociones del Pueblo, who also handle WBC champion Julio Ceja.

The WBC has previously ordered Vargas and Guillermo Rigondeaux to face each other in a final eliminator for a shot at Ceja, but it appears the Cuban Olympic gold medal winner is going in another direction.

Vargas has his critics who believe the younger is not ready for a major title shot, but he believes he is.

"They criticize me a lot because I've gone to the canvas in some of my fights, but that's what happens when one is exposed to a better level of opponents. But when I go to the canvas, it doesn't hurt me. When I get up a couple of seconds later, I am filled with rage and then it's going to be worse for my opponents," Vargas said.

"I'm at my best right now. The world champion is my teammate but I also deserve a chance to prove I'm the best in my division and I think we could make a great fight, the kind that fans would enjoy.......a war between Mexicans that could go down in history."

First up for Ceja is a rematch of his Fight of The Year contender with Hugo Ruiz. They are set to do battle for a second time in the early months of 2016.
