When you look as good as Raymond Muratalla did this past weekend, you're bound to make serious headlines.

On Saturday night, at the Tahoe Blue Event Center at Lake Tahoe, the 26-year-old supposedly took a step up in competition. Diego Torres Nunez, who sauntered to the ring with an undefeated record and a propensity for knockout highlights, wasn’t able to get it going.

Muratalla (19-0, 16 KOs) did what he wanted out there. He outboxed his man from the outside and when he came within range, outworked him on the inside.

Thanks to an eighth-round stoppage win, Muratalla now finds himself as one of the hot names at 135 pounds. Keyshawn Davis, who’s also promoted by Top Rank, has spent the last few years establishing himself as one of the mainstays in the lightweight division.

If the decision were solely his, Muratalla would love for his next fight to have a world title at stake. Davis, nevertheless, is hoping for the same. Naturally, with both fighters nearing the top of the division and having the same title aspirations, a matchup between them is inevitable.

For those hoping that the two square off in the immediate future, however, shouldn’t be holding their breath. According to Muratalla, Davis still has some catching up to do.

“I think that’s a great fight for me,” said Muratalla to Broadway Joel. “Once he gets more fights going then we can talk about that. I think he’s still coming up. He’s still learning.”

That learning curve that Muratalla is alluding to will have to take place next year. The former Olympic silver medalist saw his recent majority decision win over Nahir Albright changed to a no-contest due to Davis testing positive for marihuana. He was also subsequently suspended for the rest of the year.

Eventually, Davis will return. He’s also likely to jump back into the win column and continue his upward trajectory. If the victories and spectacular performances add up, Muratalla believes that a showdown between them will have to happen. As for how it would play out, no matter how talented Davis has proven to be, Muratalla is convinced that he’s on another level.

“I have too much weapons. Too many skills.”
