Joe DeGuardia, the co-promoter for WBO light heavyweight champion Joe Smith, believes his boxer could eventually land a showdown with Mexican superstar Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez.

Canelo, who currently holds the undisputed crown at super middleweight, had gone up to 175-pounds back in 2019 - when he captured the WBO strap with a knockout of Sergey Kovalev.

Afterwards, he would vacate the WBO title and drop down to 168. Smith would eventually capture the vacant WBO belt.

As long as Smith keeps winning, DeGuardia expects him to be in the running.

"Certainly, but that will depend on Canelo's plans as to when it could take place. Joe just has to keep winning and I think a Canelo fight will happen," DeGuardia told Sky Sports.

Smith is ready for whenever that fight opportunity comes around.

"If Canelo wants to come and fight me, I'm ready for him. That's the fight I want. Everybody would love to see that fight - it would be a big deal," Smith said.

Canelo's handlers have contacted Smith's other co-promoter, Bob Arum of Top Rank, to discuss potential fights with Smith and WBC/IBF light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev.

"Canelo has expressed interest to me about fighting Artur Beterbiev or Smith Jr," Arum said.

Last November, Canelo's manager had made an official request to the World Boxing Council - for permission to make a tremendous jump in weight to challenge cruiserweight world champion Ilunga Makabu, who makes a mandatory defense this coming Saturday night with Thabiso Mchunu.

However, in the last few weeks it's being reported that Canelo will likely remain at super middleweight and defend his belts against unbeaten WBC middleweight king, Jermall Charlo, on Cinco De Mayo weekend in May.
