Aron Martinez delivered one of the biggest surprises of the year when he beat Devon Alexander on points on Wednesday night.

The 33-year-old Mexican beat Alexander, a former IBF and WBC super-lightweight and IBF welterweight champion, on points over ten rounds in a welterweight bout in Glendale, Arizona.

The scores were 97-93 on two cards and 96-94.

The 28-year-old Alexander had lost two of his previous three fights and lost his IBF welterweight belt to Shawn Porter in December 2013. But almost no one gave Martinez a chance.

However, he took his record to 26-4, with one draw and only four knockouts, in one of his best performances. Alexander, who had hoped to repair the recent damage to his career, now stands at 26-4, with one draw and 14 wins inside the distance.

Earlier, Lee Selby retained his IBF featherweight title when he beat Fernando Montiel on points.

The Welshman won by scores of 119-109, 118-110 and 116-112 and never gave the Mexican, a former four-time world champion, a look-in.
