Patrick Day’s quest to turn things around in his career has now led to a literal fight for survival.

The former amateur standout from the Freeport section of Long Island, New York remains under round-the-clock observation from head injuries sustained in a 10th round stoppage loss to Charles Conwell. The junior middleweight crossroads bout—which aired live on DAZN evening from Wintrust Arena in Chicago, Illinois—ended with Day knocked down for the third time on the night, leaving him unconscious and requiring the aid of a stretcher in order to leave the ring.

That was just the beginning of the most important fight of his life.

Day (17-4-1, 6KOs) is now being held at nearby Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, where he underwent emergency brain surgery and was administered a breathing tube for survival purposes. As this goes to publish, Day is out of surgery and currently in a medically induced coma.

DAZN’s Claudia Trejos reported on air that Day never regained consciousness from the moment he hit the floor to the time he entered an ambulance to be rushed to the hospital. On site medical staff were quick to his aid, immediately administering an oxygen match while strapping the boxer to a gurney in order to safely remove him from the ring and transport him to proper medical care.

According to Trejos, Day experienced a seizure en route to the hospital.

For now, the amicable 27-year old—described by nearly anyone who’s come in contact with him as one of the most sincere people you will ever meet, in and out of the sport—remains in the hands of some of the best medical staff in the world. Northwestern Memorial boasts a long standing reputation for housing the top neurosurgeons, with patients being flown in from around the world in efforts to seek top-level medical care.

It’s reassuring to those closest to Day, including those immediately in his presence as efforts remain active to contact concerned family members in New York in need both of updates and means to travel to Chicago.

Further updates will be provided to BoxingScene.com at a time deemed appropriate by the Day family. Until then, his well being remains in the thoughts of the entire BoxingScene, com staff—and undoubtedly throughout the worldwide boxing community.
