As BoxingScene.com reported earlier today, a deal was finalized for eight division champion Manny Pacquiao (59-7-2, 38 KOs) to challenge WBA "regular" welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse (39-4, 36 KOs) of Argentina in Kuala, Lumpur, Malaysia on July 14.

Matthysse's promoter, Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions, announced the fight on social media.

Pacquiao's manager Michael Koncz told the Los Angeles Times that Pacquiao's MP Promotions will be the bout's lead promoter.

Top Rank will handle the fight's distribution in the United States, with ESPN picking up the contest.

The biggest news of the fight, and it's been speculated for several months, is the strong possibility that Pacquiao will not have longtime trainer Freddie Roach in his corner on fight night.

Pacquiao has been trained by Roach since 2001 - and they represent one of the longest boxer-trainer partnerships in the sport. Roach has been by his side for all of his biggest career fights.

But it now appears that Pacquiao is going to turn over the training duties to best friend Buboy Fernandez.

"Manny will make the final decision on this. He's contemplating letting Buboy shine at the finish of his career," Koncz said to The Times. "If Buboy can get a stable of boxers out of this … no hard feelings to Freddie, but Manny has not made a final decision.

"Freddie had a great run and they did a lot of great things together, but that does not mean that Manny can't go on without Freddie.

"Manny learned a lot from Freddie, but he's at the stage where he's going to be ending his career, and I truly believe this: A fighter must only have one voice in the corner and it must be a voice he can trust."

Koncz states that a final decision on the overall training situation will be determined in the next few days.
