Newly crowned World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao gave a firm opinion on last Saturday's loss by his Filipino countryman, Nonito Donaire Jr.

Last Saturday night, at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, marked the first time where Pacquiao and Donaire were featured on the same pay-per-view - although they have both been promoted by Top Rank for years.

In the main event, Pacquiao captured the WBO welterweight title with a dominating victory over Jessie Vargas, while Donaire lost his WBO super bantamweight championship on the undercard when he was outhustled over twelve rounds by Jessie Magdaleno.

Pacquiao believes Donaire did not take Magdaleno seriously and may not have taken his training camp as seriously as he should have.

“Don’t be lazy and always go hard in training,” Pacquiao said to The Manila Times. “In boxing, you cannot take your training lightly and you can’t be lazy. You have to train hard and wisely. Boxing is no joke.”

“Whoever your trainer is if you don’t train seriously, you’ll end up with nothing. I’m hoping he’ll train seriously if he’s determined to come back.”

Donaire, who was previously trained by his father and Robert Garcia is the past, used Cuban coach Ismael Salas for the fight with Magdaleno.

Magdaleno was a lot faster used his defense to take a lot of the early rounds. Donaire seemed to finally wake up in the final two rounds and took the fight to Magdaleno, but it was too late by that point.

Pacquiao did not like what he saw from Donaire in the fight and felt the younger, unbeaten Magdaleno did what he needed to do to win.

“Magdaleno is a good undefeated fighter and hungry. Donaire took his opponent for granted and I don’t know why. His footwork was heavy, no air and there’s no timing,” Pacquiao said.
