Hall of Fame trainer Ignacio “Nacho” Beristain is one of the most renowned and respected trainers in the sport of boxing. He’s trained numerous world champions and currently trains Juan Manuel Marquez who has a tough assignment Saturday night against Mile High Mike Alvarado.

Beristain has faced many fighters in his career as a trainer but there is one fighter he always holds in high regard and that is boxing’s pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather. In an interview conducted with BoxingScene in the past, Beristain even said he felt the only way to beat Mayweather was with a bat; a testament to how difficult Beristain sees the feat of dethroning the reigning WBC and WBA Welterweight champion.

Mayweather had his hands full a couple weeks back when he faced relentless Marcos Maidana who put on a great effort and pressured Mayweather continuously. Beristain was asked to give his thoughts on the fight and what he thought of Floyd’s performance.

“I liked it because [Mayweather] stood and fought Maidana’s style and he beat him. He won. I think that speaks good of Mayweather because he’s an ultra defensive fighter but when [the fans] ask something of him, he meets it and delivers” Beristain would tell BoxingScene.

Mayweather had promised he wouldn’t move and would stay in front of Maidana which made for an exciting fight. Beristain thinks he gave the people what they wanted to see and was still able to find a way to win the fight.

Beristain tried his luck against Mayweather back in 2009 when Marquez challenged him after his brief retirement and much like every name on Mayweather’s record, Nacho came up short.
