Manager Vadim Kornilov believes Golden Boy Promotions made a big mistake in rejecting an offer to stage a Ruslan Provodnikov-Lucas Matthysse rematch.

Matthysse won a close twelve round majority decision over Provodnikov in April. It was one of the better action fights of 2015.

HBO was very interested in a rematch, Golden Boy and Matthysse were not.

Kornilov, who manages Provodnikov, is also the guiding force behind newly crowned WBC junior welterweight champion Viktor Postol.

Golden Boy elected to have Matthysse face Postol in a bout for the vacant WBC 140-pound title. Postol, a far more technically sound boxer than the brawling Provodnikov, broke Matthysse down and knocked him out in the tenth round.

Kornilov felt the style or Postol was all wrong for Matthysse and Golden Boy should have accepted the offer to do the Provodnikov fight again. He indicates the door is still wide open for Matthysse to face Provodnikov in a rematch.

"Matthysse took advantage of Ruslan Provodnikov by bringing a style that we did not expect and I said that it was not going to happen again, that this was a revenge fight," Kornilov said.

"We were hoping that Matthysse would fight Provodnikov, because Ruslan is that type of fighter. He was looking for the brawl, he was looking for the trilogy. Viktor is a higher class fighter. We knew that he was going to outbox him and he was not going to outbrawl us."

"As for Lucas Matthysse, I think he'll be back to make the trilogy with Provodnikov. And those will be great fights, and I think Golden Boy now knows that when they were offered the fight, they should have not denied the fight and taken the Provodnikov fight, because that would have been the better fight for Matthysse."
