Writer's Note: 'The Following is For Entertainment Purposes Only’

By Alphonso Costello

Boxing’s pound-for-pound champion is a mythological concept much like the NCAA college football national championship. Pound-for-pound is a term used to describe the world’s best fighters regardless of weight. Just like the college football national championship, the media selects the pound-for-pound king.

I have compiled the definitive top-ten pound-for-pound list by using a comprehensive blend of complex mathematical formulas, computer generated ratings and human judgment.

Rankings updated through October 8

1. Francisco “Panchito” Bojado (18-3, 12 KO’s) - Welterweight - I can see it now, “Francisco Bojado “The Contender” season 4 winner.”

2. Floyd Mayweather Jr. (38-0, 24 KO’s) - Welterweight World Champion - The world’s best dancer is tackling his greatest challenge to date. His scheduled match against Ricky Hatton is the kind of intense training Mayweather needs to come away as champion of “Dancing with the Stars.”

3. John Travolta’s toupee - Celebrity hair-piece - If Travolta’s hair helmet had legs it would beat Floyd Mayweather in a dance off.

4. Manny Pacquiao (45-3-2, 35 KO’s) - Jr. Lightweight - Mr. Pacquiao is a modern-day Shakespeare. He produces a new drama every week.

5. Oscar De La Hoya (38-5, 30 KO’s) - Welterweight - This welterweight knockout is simply FABULOUS!

6. Sergio Mora (19-0, 4 KO’s) - Middleweight - Headline: “Mora In The Running To Face Kelly Pavlik”

What it really means: “Mora Is Running From Kelly Pavlik”

7. Rocky Juarez (27-3, 19 KO’s) - Super Featherweight - Rocky better make the most out of his third world title opportunity against Juan Manuel Marquez. He’s on the verge of becoming boxing’s version of the Buffalo Bills circa 1990-1994.

8. Vic Darchinyan (28-1, 22 KO’s) - Super Flyweight - Darchinyan is scheduled to face Federico Catubay (20-13) on October 20 somewhere in Australia. Seven of Catubuy’s losses have come by way of knockout. Now isn’t that the same as placing a punching bag in the middle of the ring?

9. Samuel Peter (29-1, 22 KO’s) - Interim Heavyweight titlist - When did he trade chins with Wladimir Klitschko?

10. Shane Mosley (44-4, 37 KO’s)* - Welterweight - *Hmm, wonder if he was training buddies with Barry Bonds?*
