Last week, WBC, WBA middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez expressed his desire to pursue a world title in the future at 175-pounds.

Canelo has captured belts at junior middleweight, middleweight and super middleweight.

He returns to the ring on May 4th, when he takes part in an upcoming unification fight against IBF champion Daniel Jacobs at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Should he defeat Jacobs and unify three of the major belts at 160, he doesn't rule out the possibility of going hunting for the WBO world title, which is currently held by Demetrius Andrade. He wants to become the first Mexican fighter to unify an entire weight division with all four belts.

In the future, one fight Canelo would have interest in is a showdown with WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev.

Canelo does not disclose whether or not a potential fight at light heavyweight would involve a catch-weight or a rehydration clause - and any scenario to make a fight at 175 would not happen until 2020 or even later.

"We do not rule out the possibility (of fighting at 175 pounds)," said Canelo to ESPN Deportes.

"At this moment we have other things in mind, but the possibility exists. It's a huge challenge, but it's the type of things that I like, I know (Sergey) Kovalev since I was 20 years old, and why not, we could make a fight between us and I like those challenges, there is the possibility of making that fight."

Main Events CEO Kathy Duva, who promotes Kovalev, saw Canelo's comments - but she realizes the possibility of that fight is still some time away.

“I saw the statements of Alvarez,” said Duva. “At this point, knowing the plans of Canelo, it seems to me that the fight with Sergey is not in the near future. But, if Alvarez grows into the weight division and becomes a light heavyweight, then such a fight will surely take place. This would be the biggest fight in Kovalev's career."
