Kosei Tanaka is eager to bring his talents stateside.

A public plea was made by the former three-division titlist to earn the opportunity to fight in the U.S. Tanaka has fought exclusively in his home country of Japan throughout his nine-year pro career but is now prepared to expand his horizons.

“I will soon become the world champion in four [weight divisions]. I'm ready to fight in America,” Tanaka publicly stated days after his most recent win, a fifth-round stoppage of unbeaten countryman Masayoshi Hashizume on June 29 in Tokyo. “I want to [fight] in America.”

The dream could come within the next couple months.

ESPN Knockout’s Fernando Barboza recently revealed that WBC junior bantamweight titlist Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez will likely return on the September 17 DAZN Pay-Per-View undercard of the trilogy clash between Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Gennadiy ‘GGG’ Golovkin. Tanaka’s name has emerged as a potential future challenger for Rodriguez (16-0, 11KOs), should the 22-year-old San Antonio remain at 115 pounds for his next fight and regardless of whether he lands on the Alvarez-Golovkin 3 undercard.

The 27-year-old Tanaka (17-1, 10KOs)—who hails from Nagoya, Japan—has won WBO titles at strawweight, junior flyweight and flyweight. He accomplished the feat by his 12th pro bout, sharing the record Vasiliy Lomachenko (16-2, 11KOs) among male boxers to become a three-division titlist in the fewest number of fights.

Tanaka fell short of destroying the record for the quickest to become a four-division titlist. His efforts were thwarted by countryman Kazuto Ioka, who remained Japan’s lone male boxer to hold titles at four weights after stopping Tanaka in the eighth round of their New Year’s Eve 2020 WBO junior bantamweight title fight in Tokyo.

Two wins have since followed for Tanaka, who still has six fights to beat or at least the all-time match the mark set by Hall of Fame former six-division titlist Oscar De La Hoya, who became a four-division champ in his 24th pro fight. That very much remains a goal for the current junior bantamweight contender, as does proving himself in a new market.

“I want to achieve one dream of fighting in America,” vows Tanaka. “I'm looking for a chance.”
