LAS VEGAS – Joshua Greer Jr. thought he did enough to bounce back Saturday night from the loss that cost him a bantamweight title shot.

The judges disagreed.

Adalaide Byrd scored the bantamweight contender’s eight-round fight 77-75 for Edwin Rodriguez. Max De Luca and John McKaie each scored the action even, 76-76, which left Greer and Rodriguez to settle for a majority draw on the Terence Crawford-Kell Brook undercard at MGM Grand Conference Center.

Chicago’s Greer (22-2-2, 12 KOs) fought for the first time since Mike Plania upset him by majority decision in their 10-rounder June 16 at MGM Grand Conference Center. Puerto Rico’s Rodriguez (11-5-2, 5 KOs) seemed to slow down toward the end of their bout, but the judges thought he did enough to avoid losing.

Greer’s left hook to Rodriguez’s body made Rodriguez move away from him with about 25 seconds to go in the eighth round. Greer was the busier, more accurate fighter during those final three minutes.

Greer landed a straight right that backed up Rodriguez with just over a minute to go in the sixth round. Greer caught Rodriguez with another right hand that made Rodriguez move away from him toward the end of the sixth round.

For a second straight round, Ruiz warned Greer for hitting Rodriguez with a low blow in the fifth round. That foul caused a brief break in the action with 32 seconds to go in the fifth.

Greer landed a combination, but Rodriguez smiled and kept coming forward about 1:10 into the fourth round. Rodriguez nailed Greer with a left hook up top a little later in the fourth.

Rodriguez’s right hand knocked Greer backward with just under a minute remaining in the third round. Rodriguez was the aggressor for much of that third round and landed several flush lefts to Greer’s body in those three minutes.

Ruiz warned Greer for landing a low blow with just under 30 seconds to go in the fourth round. Greer tried to work off his jab for most of the second round.

Greer went after Rodriguez’s body hard toward the end of the second round.

Rodriguez drilled Greer with a left hook with about a minute to go in the first round. Rodriguez caught Greer with a solid right hand about 15 seconds later.

Greer bled from his nose when he went back to his corner after the first round.

Seven rounds later, Greer settled for another disappointing conclusion at MGM Grand Conference Center.

The Philippines’ Plania (24-1, 12 KOs), an unknown underdog, knocked down the favored Greer twice, with left hooks in the first and sixth rounds. A gutsy Greer withstood those knockdowns and rallied in the later rounds to make their 10-round junior featherweight fight competitive.

An exhausted Plania literally held on at times in the eighth, ninth and 10th rounds, and won a majority decision.

Judges Tim Cheatham (96-92) and Patricia Morse-Jarman (97-91) scored the fight for Plania. Judge Dave Moretti scored their fight a draw (94-94).

The 26-year-old Greer entered the bout as the WBO’s number one contender for its bantamweight champion, the Philippines’ Johnriel Casimero (30-4, 21 KOs). Greer also was ranked second by the IBF for a shot at its 118-pound champion, Japan’s Naoya Inoue (20-0, 17 KOs) at that time.
