IN A dramatic four minutes and 58 seconds, Josh Webb's fight for the Queensland light heavyweight title against Philip Maley featured two knock-downs, a lot of blood and a contentious technical draw.

Webb was trying to add the Queensland title to the Victorian belt he won earlier in the year when he took on Sunshine Coaster Maley at Gold Coast Turf Club on Sunday.

Maley was on top early, landing two strong body blows on Webb.

The shots dropped the Toowoomba boxer twice in the first round and had trainer Brandon Wood thinking his charge was in trouble.

But Webb responded in the second round and took the ascendancy.

Wood said Webb went on the attack and opened up Maley just above his eye with a punch.

The cut was considerable and bled heavily, with the referee conferring with judges to decide how the cut was made and there was contention over whether it was a punch or an accidental head clash.

The fight was declared a technical draw one minute 58 seconds into the second round.

Wood accepted the decision but stated Webb landed a punch which caused the cut, and that his fighter was well on top.

"It was a big effort. Body shots are the worst," Wood said.

"On the up side, he got up from that and got on top and belted him in the second."

A rematch could be on the cards, while a shot at the Australian light heavyweight title could also be an option for Webb.

Wood said it was likely the winner of Sunday's fight would have got a shot at leading light heavyweight Trent Broadhurst.

"Next year we would definitely love to take care of unfinished business. Taking care of Phil Maley would be my preference," Wood said. "Having a technical draw on your record, we'd like to fix that up."

The Webb camp will consider its options this week.

"We'll have a look at the right move for the next fight. His name is getting well-known in the country," manager Brendon Smith said.
