There was a period of time when Joe Calzaghe was best super middleweight in the world, with three of the four major titles around his waist in 2007.

Calzaghe retired in 2008, after moving up to light heavyweight to win bouts over Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr.

The Welsh star retired with a perfect 46-0 record, with 32 wins by knockout.

Last year, Mexican superstar Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez became the first boxer to unify all four of the major sanctioning titles - when he knocked out Caleb Plant to unite the WBC, WBA, WBO, IBF belts.

And Canelo managed to achieve that accomplishment in under a year with wins over Callum Smith, Billy Joe Saunders, and Plant.

Canelo is now a four division world champion, with belts captured at junior middleweight, middleweight, super middleweight and light heavyweight.

Calzaghe is not only impressed with Canelo's ability to become undisputed at 168, but also with the quick manner that he did so.

He could have loved to have to been around at super middleweight at the same time as Canelo.

“Well, what can you say [about Canelo]? To go and clean out the super middleweight division – it took me years to do that. It just goes to show he’s got a great management," Calzaghe told Talk Sport.

“He’s an excellent fighter, but to be honest with you, he’s a fight I’d have loved to have had. When I watched him against Caleb Plant, I think it was quite a close fight. And I think, ‘What would I have done to Plant?’

“It’s a great fight, I wish I was around fighting still – it would’ve been not only the biggest payday of my life but it’d have been my best fight.”
