At first it was on, then it was off but now it has been confirmed that tonight’s fight between Ishmael Davis and Troy Williamson will go ahead.

Early this morning it looked like the fight had been cancelled after Williamson missed weight by a massive 4.2lbs but - after a fraught 24 hours - the pair will still meet on the undercard of the super lightweight showdown between British 140lb champion, Dalton Smith, and three-time world title challenger Jose Zepeda.

The fight was originally scheduled as a final eliminator for the British super welterweight title but was thrown into doubt when Williamson weighed in at 158.2lbs at yesterday’s weigh in. Davis held up his part of the bargain and tipped the scales at 153.8lbs.

Discussions were held to try and salvage the fight but it seemed like efforts had been in vain.

Davis posted the following on social media;

“Sorry to everyone who has been let down i have done everything i needed to do for this fight made eight exactly how it should be done he came in 4 pounds over and didn’t want to make and agreement for what weight he should be in the morning trust me I’m the most gutted iv ever felt and thanks for all he messages I’m just not in the best mood tonight to be replying to everyone as you can imagine but i appreciate it highly and this is just the beginning i will be back very soon.”

Things can change quickly in boxing and just after 9am this morning, Davis was back online and this time he had more positive news.

“FIGHT IS NOW BACK ON SEE YOU GUYS TONIGHT A FAIR AGREEMENT HAS BEEN MADE AND ITS TIME TO ROCK OUT! SORRY FOR THE INCONVENIENCE ITS NONE OF MY FAULT BUT IM READY LETS GO!!!!”

Boxingscene understands that the fight is still scheduled for 12 rounds and that - after successfully making weight - Davis will still become the mandatory challenger if he wins.

Davis, 12-0 (6 KOs), shot to prominence last November when he dismantled the previously unbeaten Ewan McKenzie and the 28 year old from Leeds moved directly into the attractive, important fight with former British super welterweight champion, Williamson. Davis will have endured a roller coaster of emotions over the past 24 hours but will now need to refocus on the task at hand.

The powerful Williamson, 20-2-1 (14 KOs), has suffered two tame defeats recently. He lost his British 154lb title to Josh Kelly in December 2022 and lost a split decision to Caoimhin Agyarko late last year. The 32 year old from Darlington would have faced an uncertain future had the fight been cancelled but - despite the controversy - beating Davis will at least keep him relevant. He can worry about which weight he will compete at in the future afterwards.
