Former super middleweight champion and Sky Sports pundit, Carl Froch, was far from impressed with the recent victory by Amir Khan, who this past Saturday night survived a knockdown to claim a twelve round unanimous decision victory over Samuel Vargas in Birmingham.

Before a wild Birmingham crowd, Khan was put on the canvas at the end of the second round, with a big overhand right, when he appeared to be in complete control.

Vargas, who was a heavy underdog in the bout, would also wobble Khan at the end of the tenth round, as Khan left himself open and appeared to be on unsteady legs in the closing seconds.

Khan thereafter boxed more cagily, and could not deliver a knockout blow against a tough opponent who went the distance despite suffering a broken nose.

However Khan was an overwhelming victor on the judges scorecards, winning 119-108, 119-109, 118-110.

Kell Brook, touted as a frontrunner to face Khan, was watching the fight from ringside. Although Khan showed heart, there was little on show to concern Brook.

Froch explained that Vargas had been dominated and stopped by top welterweights like Danny Garcia and Errol Spence - which spells bad news for Khan, who was down, wobbled and had some issues in the late rounds as his punch output declined.

Based on what Froch witnessed, he is not giving Khan much of a chance to beat the top tier fighters at welterweight - like Spence, Terence Crawford, Garcia and Keith Thurman.

“It’s a twelve round lackluster performance against limited opposition in Vargas, who we’ve seen when he steps up to the likes of Errol Spence and Garcia, he gets absolutely wiped out and outclassed - and knocked out," Froch told IFL TV.

“Fundamental point is: at world level, that performance from Amir Khan will not be enough to beat them top boys in that division.”
