According to sources in Mexico, former multi-division champion Jhonny Gonzalez (59-10, 49KOs) is being eyed as a potential opponent for newly crowned WBC super featherweight champion Francisco Vargas (23-0-1, 17KOs).

There has reportedly been some minor discussions between Golden Boy Promotions and Promociones del Pueblo on staging the fight.

Gonzalez lost his WBC featherweight title when he was stopped by Gary Russell Jr. last March. He recovered from that loss by August and stopped Japan's Kazumi Hashimoto in two rounds. But then another setback hit in September when he was upset over ten rounds by Jonathan Oquendo on the Mayweather-Berto PPV undercard. And once again he recovered, by winning a twelve round unanimous decision over Hurrican Futa in December.

The winner over Futa gained Gonzalez the WBC silver International super featherweight championship and secured him a high number #7 ranking within the organization.

Vargas is now allowed to take a voluntary or two, because he was the mandatory challenger when he captured his title in a stunning 'Fight of The Year' knockout victory over Japan's feared Takashi Miura last November as part of the Cotto-Canelo undercard at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. Vargas went down early in that fight and had a badly swollen eye before coming back to knock Gonzalez out in ninth round. Earlier that year, he knocked out Will Tomlinson in eight rounds in March.
