NEW YORK – Gervonta Davis was asked over the weekend whether Floyd Mayweather Jr. will knock out Conor McGregor.

The ever-confident Davis didn’t directly answer the question, but his response clearly indicated he doesn’t think McGregor stands much of a chance to last 12 rounds against his mentor in their 154-pound boxing match August 26 in Las Vegas.

“I can knock out Conor,” Davis said.

The unbeaten IBF super featherweight champion’s answer drew laughter throughout the Barclays Center interview room early Saturday evening. The 22-year-old Davis also relayed a story about how the trash-talking McGregor didn’t spare the knockout artist from Baltimore as he spewed insults during the infamous Mayweather-McGregor press tour that spanned four days, four cities and three countries earlier this month.

“He called me a little bitch,” a smiling Davis recalled. “I just laughed at him. I was just happy to be there, just at the press conference. It was an event, so it’s gonna be big August the 26th.”

Davis (18-0, 17 KOs) is expected to make his second 130-pound title defense against Puerto Rico’s Rocky Martinez in the[KI1]  Showtime Pay-Per-View co-featured fight August 26 at T-Mobile Arena. Puerto Rico’s Martinez (29-3-3, 17 KOs) hasn’t fought since Ukraine’s Vasyl Lomachenko (8-1, 6 KOs) knocked out the 34-year-old former champion in the fifth round to win the WBO 130-pound championship 13 months ago in The Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Davis, Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe and Showtime Sports executive Stephen Espinoza declined to discuss Davis’ upcoming opponent during a question-and-answer session that lasted nearly 35 minutes Saturday night before the Mikey Garcia-Adrien Broner main event at Barclays Center.

An official announcement on the entire Mayweather-McGregor undercard is expected to be made later this week.
