After a failed attempt to dethrone compatriot and World Boxing Association featherweight super champion Chris John, Daud “Cino” Yordan has another shot at a world title.

The 24-year-old Indonesian will fight for the International Boxing Organization’s vacant featherweight title against Lorenzo Villanueva of the Philippines at Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands resort on May 5, on the undercard of Chris’s title defense against Japan’s Shoji Kimura.

The IBO featherweight title has been open since champion Jhonny Gonzalez of Mexico won the World Boxing Council’s featherweight title.

But Daud realizes that he will have to step up his game if he wants to be Indonesia’s other world champion. “That will be a hard and difficult bout,” he said.

“[Villanueva] has a very impressive record and is also a left-hander, but I know that I can beat him and take the belt.”

Villanueva, who trained under Freddie Roach, Manny Pacquiao’s coach, has knocked out all but one opponent in his 22 fights.

In his latest bout, on Jan. 28, the Filipino took only one minute and 17 seconds to knock out Mexico’s Diego Ledesma in Cebu, the Philippines.

Daud, regarded as “the next Chris John,” has a 28-2-0 record with 22 knockouts since turning professional in 2005.

The West Kalimantan fighter suffered one of his two losses during an attempt to take Chris’ crown in the country’s biggest fight, last year in Jakarta.

Daud won the IBO Asia-Pacific featherweight title last year in September after knocking out American boxer Frankie Archuleta in Australia.

He said his managers had invited him to train with Chris in Australia for the next bout.

“But I’m most comfortable at home in Ketapang [West Kalimantan], so I don’t think I’ll go there,” he said.

Despite Villanueva’s strong record, the fight will be his first outside his country.

“It’s an exciting opportunity to prove myself,” said the 26-year-old Villaneuva. “I have full respect for Daud. I promise to make this fight exciting.”
