Frank Warren believes that Daniel Dubois is far more than a big puncher and says his heavyweight prospect is a far better boxer than he is given credit for.

Dubois, who last week was named Young Boxer of the Year by the Boxing Writers’ Club, faces Ebenezer Tetteh, of Ghana, for the vacant Commonwealth heavyweight title at the Royal Albert Hall on Friday, having won the vacant British title by beating Nathan Gorman in July.

The 22-year-old Londoner knocked Gorman out in the fifth round, but Warren says Dubois is a world-class boxer and likened his jab to the favoured weapon of former heavyweight champion Larry Holmes.

“He is not just a big, cumbersome clubber,” Warren said at a press conference at the BT Sport studios in East London on Tuesday. “When he gets that jab going, he shows how capable he is. I’ve said it on many occasions that he is the best young heavyweight I have worked with.”

Dubois shrugged off his win over Gorman. “I wasn’t trying to do anything, I just went in there and did what I know I have always done,” Dubois said. “I have been in this game for a long time, through the amateur system, so it is just natural for me, using my jab and putting on a boxing performance.”

He added that he would be happy if Tetteh stuck by his promise to come and try to knock him out.

“If’s he’s up for it, I’m up for it,” Dubois said. “It’s going to be a good fight.

“I’ve seen a few clips, I don’t really study my opponents, I’m just ready for a fight. Every challenge brings something new.

“I’ve showed what I can do and I’ll get better at it. It’s only a matter of time until I get up there with the big boys.

“I’m a man on a mission, I’m not going to be stopped. It’s going to be a devastating performance.”
