A superb performance by Tom Stalker and a stunning first-round stoppage by Simon Vallily were the highlights in a final day of boxing at the Commonwealth Games, which saw members of the GB Boxing squad come away with two gold and four silver medals.

The six medal haul marked an excellent return for GB Boxing with half of the 12 boxers it selected securing a medal.  The winners were:

GOLD

Tom Stalker, England, 60Kg

Simon Vallily, England, 91Kg

SILVER

Sean McGoldrick, Wales, 56Kg

Bradley Saunders, England 64Kg

Callum Smith, England, 69Kg

Antony Ogogo, England, 75Kg

GB Boxing’s Performance Director and Head Coach of the England team, Rob McCracken said: “To secure two golds and four silvers is a superb performance by the GB Boxing squad.  It has been a high quality competition and the GB boxers have had some tough draws so for half of the squad we selected to come away with a medal is an excellent return.

“The performance of the boxers builds on the superb progress the GB Boxing squad has made in 2010, when it has now won 28 medals in 6 elite international competitions, and augurs well for more success at 2012.”

Liverpool’s Tom Stalker landed the first gold with a superb performance.  After a close opening round which finished 2-2, Stalker’s experience told as he only conceded one more point and eased to an 11-3 victory against Scotland’s Josh Taylor.

Heavyweight, Simon Vallily rounded-off an excellent tournament for GB Boxing with a powerful first-round stoppage of Northern Ireland’s Steven Ward.  It was the third time Vallily had stopped his opponent in the tournament.

The day started with a close defeat for 18-year old Sean McGoldrick who narrowly lost out on a countback to Manju Wanniarachchi of Sri Lanka.

Bradley Saunders and Antony Ogogo both won silver medals in the 64Kg and 75Kg categories respectively and in the 69Kg category, Callum Smith capped a fine tournament with a silver medal.  He becomes the third member of his family to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games, after brothers Paul and Stephen took silver and gold in 2002 and 2006 respectively.
