The melodrama involving Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and David Benavidez finally reached its conclusion on Thursday, but it took two years of Benavidez twisting in the wind as mandatory challenger and Alvarez repeatedly passing on the matchup in the face of increasing public criticism.

Although the matter was ended, it was hardly resolved.

On Wednesday’s episode of ProBox TV’s “Deep Waters,” analyst Chris Algieri discussed the damage done when elite fighters play politics, tie up divisions and stunt the growth of boxing’s burgeoning stars. Benavidez, Algieri said, is one of the victims – but he is hardly alone.
