Starfight Productions, Inc. is pleased to announce the ring return of WBC USNBC Lightweight Champion, Edner “Cherry Bomb” Cherry on May 21, 2008. The lightweight contender appears in a ten round title defense against former WBC Lightweight World Champion Stevie “Lil’ But Bad” Johnston in the main event of ESPN2’s Wednesday Night Fights series.

The very special presentation of ESPN2’s popular broadcast will air live from the United States Marine base of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

The co-featured bout will feature former world champion Freddie Norwood in an eight round bout against Johnny Edwards of North Carolina.

Cherry (23-5-2, 11 KO), of Wauchula, Florida, is returning to the ring for the first time since his impressive knockout victory over Floyd Mayweather protégé, Wes Ferguson, in December 2007 on the Mayweather-Ricky Hatton PPV undercard.  Cherry is widely considered one of the top Lightweight contenders; he hopes an impressive victory over former world champion Johnston will lead to a championship fight by the end of 2008.

Johnston (42-5-1, 18 KO), of Denver, Colorado, was once considered one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the world but unexpectedly lost his world title to Jose Luis Castillo in June 2000. Since that time, Johnston has tried to recapture the world title but has come up just short with a draw to Castillo in their rematch and subsequent losses to Juan Lazcano, Vivian Harris, and Rolando Reyes.

The southpaw veteran is hoping that a victory over the younger Cherry will get him back in the world title mix.

This interesting ten round main event can be seen nationwide on ESPN2’s broadcast of “Wednesday Night Fights.”  As stated earlier, the event will be held at the US Marine Base of Camp Lejeune in North Carolina as a special treat to the service men and women stationed there and the show is being held only days after the observance of Memorial Day. Starfight Productions, Inc. and Edner Cherry are proud to be part of such a wonderful and meaningful event.
