Charles Conwell considers himself just about ready to fight for Jermell Charlo’s 154-pound titles.

Charlo has mandatory obligations he’ll have to fulfill in 2023 if he intends to keep each of his four championships, starting with Tim Tszyu. Conwell nevertheless is moving toward earning his own title shot.

The Cleveland native defeated rugged Dominican veteran Juan Carlos Abreu by majority decision in their 10-rounder Saturday night at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. Conwell (18-0, 13 KOs) fought through a cut across his left eyebrow for nine-plus rounds and appeared to clearly beat Abreu (25-7-1, 23 KOs, 1 NC), despite that one judge scored their fight a draw (98-92, 96-94, 95-95).

Regardless, Conwell’s plan for 2023 includes a title shot toward the end of it for the 2016 U.S. Olympian.

“If I could map it out for myself,” Conwell told BoxingScene.com, “I would fight one more time in a final title eliminator and then fight for a title at the end of 2023. I would just like to get some of those ex-world champions on my resume, just so I can get that experience.”

Experience is the only advantage Conwell senses that Charlo has when he compares himself to the IBF/WBA/WBC/WBO champion.

Houston’s Charlo (35-1-1, 19 KOs) avenged his only loss, a close decision defeat to Tony Harrison in December 2018, when he knocked out Detroit’s Harrison (29-3-1, 21 KOs) in the 11th round of their rematch in December 2019. Charlo became boxing’s first fully unified 154-pound champion of the four-belt era when he knocked out Argentina’s Brian Castano (17-1-2, 12 KOs) in the 10th round of their rematch May 14 at Dignity Health Sports Park.

“As far as me with Charlo, I feel I’m better than him in every area of boxing,” Conwell said. “The only thing he has over me is experience, I feel like. But other than that, skill for skill, I feel like I’m just as good or better in every other department.”

The 25-year-old Conwell expects Charlo, 32, to defeat Australia’s Tszyu (21-0, 15 KOs) when they fight January 28 at a venue to be determined. Tszyu is the mandatory challenger for Charlo’s WBO belt.

“Against Tim Tszyu, I definitely think he’s gonna come out victorious,” Conwell said. “I think Tim Tszyu is gonna try to come on early, but I think Charlo has seen everything that Tim Tszyu has to offer. I really don’t think Tim Tszyu beats him.”
