In a recent interview with BoxingScene.com, Gennady Golovkin's trainer, Abel Sanchez, made claims that their upcoming opponent, Canelo Alvarez, isn’t pulling his promotional weight.

The "ginger" is acting the diva in the lead-up to the Sept. 15 rematch between the Mexican pugilist and the Kazahk smasher, Sanchez told BoxingScene on Monday.

The first meeting, which took place in September 2017, ended with a controversial twelve round split draw.

After being advised of the claims, Golden Boy Promotions President Eric Gomez fired back at Sanchez.

Canelo is a Golden Boy boxer, and Gomez has been a fixture at Canelo's camp, as we tick down to the middleweight battle for 160 supremacy, in Last Vegas, and on PPV.

“Bullsh*t,” Gomez told me. “Fake news. Canelo has done more interviews than GGG!”

This isn’t just spinning of wheels…or maybe it is. But doing press does matter, in that the payouts are not guaranteed. More people buying the PPV means everyone makes more money. So, it makes sense that maybe everyone cares who is working how hard on media stuff…

So, Mr. Gomez, I get the sense that maybe the mood in the Canelo camp is this—I want to prove that I’m clean and mean.

“Absolutely,” Gomez stated.

It isn’t just promotional hype, and we aren’t going to see Canelo smart-box his way through 12 rounds and hope for kindly judging?

“He’s ready to knock Golovkin out,” the Golden Boy deal-maker said.

He finished with a message for  me and for Sanchez, the sage from Big Bear, CA who does a fine job stirring up the pot, and letting his fighter focus on in-the-ring matters.

“Bro, Abel doesn’t know. There’s a huge story in the Sunday LA Times, look it up. He has interviews (on Wednesday), Thursday and Friday,” Gomez said.
