Canelo Alvarez won’t argue with you. In fact, he agrees with his critics.

For roughly a year now, Alvarez hasn’t looked quite like himself. His check left hook hasn’t forced his opponents to take a step back and his right hand hasn’t turned out anyone’s lights recently. Not known as the quickest fighter around, Alvarez has looked slower than ever.

Words hurt. They cut deeply but Alvarez knows his critics aren’t just having a field day on him because they have nothing better to do. The Mexican native has popped in the tape and took a look for himself. Although he hates to admit it, he saw a fighter who wasn’t bouncing up and down on his toes and cutting off the ring. He also saw one who wasn't creative on offense.

A surgically repaired left wrist has Alvarez feeling a bit differently lately. And while he can talk a good game if he wants, with his upcoming showdown against Jermell Charlo getting closer, he’d rather give a full demonstration as to why he won’t look like the same listless fighter.

“I feel 100% right now,” Alvarez told Premier Boxing Champions. “I can say a lot of things but I want to show you Saturday.”

Charlo, the current 154-pound champion who decided to move up in weight, is preparing for the best Canelo Alvarez. At his peak, the 33-year-old is one of the best fighters on the planet. We’ve all heard it before. An aging star, desperate to stay in the spotlight, will say just about anything to convince fans, media members, and of course, himself, that he hasn’t lost a step. They’ll begin to repeat those same phrases. You know what they are. “I’m in the best shape of my career.” “This was my best training camp.” “I feel 25 again.”

In the case of Alvarez, he’s going down a similar path. He recently moved his training camp from San Diego to Truckee, California. Working out in the altitude has Alvarez feeling confident. More than usual.

If you’re expecting to see the same Alvarez that appeared to have little to no gas in the tank in the second half against Gennadiy Golovkin and John Ryder, you’ve got another thing coming. That intense training coupled with his own personal motivation, has Alvarez feeling like a new man.

“You’re going to see a different Canelo Saturday night.”
