The world championship committee of the World Boxing Association will investigate the situation related to the cancellation of the fight between Panamanian featherweight champion Celestino 'Pelenchín' Caballero and undefeated mandatory challenger Miguel 'Mikey' Garcia.

This mandatory clash is the center of an ongoing controversy which may become a legal war.

First, promoter Sampson Lewkowicz, who won the WBA's purse bid, scheduled a fight date of July 28th in Indio, California. Then it was pushed back to Sept. 7 in Las Vegas, and then finally it was cancelled. Caballero was guaranteed a purse of $330,000 for the fight.

The other party to the conflict is Panamanian promoter Rogelio Espino, who acknowledged that he advised Caballero not to fight on September 7.

Lewkowicz has now accused Espino of being responsible for the cancellation of the event and promised to file a lawsuit for damages. Espino has promised to countersue.

Gilberto Jesus Mendoza, vice president of the WBA, confirmed that the world championship committee shall review the situation.

"Documents have been produced by Lewkowicz to support his argument that he complied with the requirements of [providing the fight with] contracts," Mendoza said.
