Closure will finally come of the World Boxing Super Series cruiserweight tournament.

More than a year after storming their way into the finals with knockout wins, Mairis Briedis and Yuniel Dorticos finally get to crown a cruiserweight king. The two will meet September 26 live on DAZN from  Plazamedia Broadcasting Center in Munich, Germany, with the winner to gain recognition as the WBSS Season Two cruiserweight champion, as well as reestablishing championship lineage in the division.

“We are thrilled to announce the date and place for the exciting finale of Season II of the WBSS,” said Andreas Benz, CEO of Comosa AG, organizer of the World Boxing Super Series. “Plazamedia is a phenomenal solution, the studios are providing a controlled environment which is of huge benefit to us and the production team to keep everyone safe while also putting on a great show.

“At the same time, we have done everything to secure fair conditions for both teams, and to ensure they remain healthy and isolated until the action starts.”

Briedis and Dorticos both scored separate knockouts on the same show last June in Riga, Latvia.

Doritcis (24-1, 22KOs) earned 2019 Knockout of the Year honors for his feat, with the Miami-based Cuban flattening previously unbeaten Andrew Tabiti in the 10th round of their tournament semifinal. The bout came in supporting capacity to a far more controversial affair, where locally-based Briedis (26-1, 19KOs) scored a 3rd round knockout of Krzysztof Glowacki in a wild affair which resulted in two separate protests.

The ongoing dilemma delayed the tournament final by several months, with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic twice postponing the event in 2020. Comosa brass have finally worked out the particulars to get their highly anticipated show on the road, to which all parties remained patient and confident of it coming to fruition.

“We are very happy about the announcement of the final,” said Briedis, whose lone loss to came to WBSS Season One winner Oleksandr Usyk in their March 2018 semifinal and unification bout. “I love the fact that it will be in Munich as it reminds me of every time I went to train with the Klitschko brothers in Germany and the flights were always via Munich.

“Those are some great memories of the time spent with them there!”

For Dorticos, it means yet another road trip but without having to concede hometown advantage. Original plans called for a return to Briedis’ Riga backyard, although the final location never mattered as much as where the tournament’s Muhammad Ali Trophy lands.

“To all my fans worldwide, in Europe and especially in Munich, Germany: I am super happy the World Boxing Super Series final will take place in Munich, Germany,” exclaimed Dorticos, who suffered a 12th round stoppage to Murat Gassiev in their Season One semifinal and unification bout in February 2018. “The KO Doctor is back and ready to prescribe another dose of pain and take the Muhammad Ali Trophy back to Miami!”
