With each fight, Alfredo Angulo is determined to show there’s still some bite left in this old “Perro.”

The 37-year old Mexican banger secured at least one more big payday following an upset win over Peter Quillin in their 10-round slugfest Saturday evening at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield, Calif.

“This one was for all my fans who stuck with me through the years,” a humbled Angulo (26-7, 21KOs) stated following the win, which aired live on FS1. “Mexican heart is difficult to overcome in the ring.”

It proved an insurmountable task for Quillin, who is 14 months Angulo’s junior but—as Saturday showed—still an old 36 in ring years. The Brooklyn-based ring veteran—sought to box early but, as the fight wore on, was unable to keep Angulo at bay.

The general perception is that Quillin—a former middleweight titlist who fought for just the fourth time in four years—is long past his best sell date and to the point where he has little to nothing left to offer the sport.

As much can be—and has been—said of Angulo, though he and his current two-fight win streak refuse to listen to such talk. It didn’t seem that way during a rough five-year stretch where he lost five times in the span of seven fights.

The thing is, Angulo will be the first to agree with you—about the previous losses, not co-signing on his no longer being equipped for the tittle stage.

“Maybe the last 5-6 years I wasn’t the same,” admitted Angulo, who insists he is reborn ever since hooking up with renowned trainer Abel Sanchez. “Now next to Abel, it’s back to the old Perro.

“Little by little, with each fight I improve. Maybe my next fight, I look even better.”
