Zak Chelli looked a fighter with a promising future although he was denied the best win of his career as his super-middleweight ten-rounder with Jack Cullen ended in a draw to open up the five-fight card on Eddie Hearn’s final Fight Camp show.

Chelli gave away height and reach but showed better movement, a better engine and more power to dominate from the fourth round onwards.

Cullen had started well, keeping his defences tight and score with a sharp left jab, while Chelli, who struggled with swelling around the left eye from the third round onwards, relied on fast bursts of punches when Cullen was in range.

But after doing well in the early rounds, Cullen struggled to keep the Londoner off him and when they exchanged, Chelli was landing with more power and seemed to have done enough to earn the verdict.

Mark Lyson scored it 97-93 to Chelli, while Victor Loughlin went for Cullen by 96-95, Ian John-Lewis scored it a draw, 95-95. John Latham refereed.

Cullen was content to tuck up in the first round and let Chelli come on to him, the Londoner getting through with a cuffing overhand right. Roles were reversed in the second, as Cullen came forward more behind his jab, while Chelli loaded up on counters.

The jab of Cullen was starting to take charge in the third, as Chelli’s left eye started to swell shut. He was dominant in the fourth round too, sticking Chelli with a sharp jab, but as the ten-second warning came for the end of the round, Chelli whipped over a right hook and then followed it with another and landed an uppercut as the pair opened up.

By now, Cullen was cut around the left eye too and while he was doing well in the exchanges, at the end of the fifth round, Cullen started to show signs of fatigue. The sixth was a better round for Chelli, as he landed repeatedly down the middle and one crunching left hook found Cullen’s chin.

Cullen got more aggressive in the seventh as he tried to regain some initiative, but Chelli was throwing every punch with bad intentions and enough were going through. The eighth was another good round for Chelli, as Cullen, with blood running down the left side of his face, looked like he was running out of ideas.

There was another fast start to the ninth by Cullen, but when Chelli upped the pace, he caught Cullen flush with wide hooks. Cullen never stopped trying, but Chelli kept on top in the final round, catching Cullen repeatedly.
