Theater, Madison Square Garden, New York City - In the opening bout of an HBO televised tripleheader, Jason Sosa (20-3-4, 15 KOs) fell short and lost a ten round majority decision to former unified featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa (28-2, 17 KOs). The scores were 94-94, 95-93, 96-92 for Gamboa. Many at ringside saw Sosa as the winner.

Gamboa came in as a late replacement for Robinson Castellanos, who withdrew with injury. Castellanos stopped Gamboa back in May in a shocking upset. He picked up a minor victory with a ten round majority decision in August against Alexis Reyes.

Sosa was coming back from a TKO defeat at the hands of WBO super featherweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko back in April. It was Sosa's first defeat since 2010.

Gamboa started fast, doing good boxing and making decent contact on the slower Sosa, who was being aggressive and coming forward. In the second round, Gamboa continued to outbox with hard shots to the head and body. Sosa was able to connect with some decent shots in the closing seconds.

Sosa continued to press forward with hard shots being fired from both hands. He was starting to outwork Gamboa as the round played out. Gamboa made things close in the fourth, as he made a lot of contact and was making Sosa miss. Sosa was still pressing forward with a lot of punches.

At the start of the fifth, Gamboa connected with some very hard shots that Sosa walked right through. Gamboa's boxing ability and movement was giving Sosa a lot of trouble to land his shots. In the sixth, Gamboa was outworking him early with good combinations when they got in close. Sosa began working hard as the round played out and landed some decent punches.

At the start of the seventh, there was a knockdown called because Gamboa got hit with a right hand that caused him to dip down and his glove touched the mat. Sosa was starting to do some real damage with the punches that he was landing to the head and body. Sosa continued to push forward with good shots in the eight and did the better work.

Gamboa looked dead tired in the ninth round and for the most part he was holding as Sosa was pressing forward and working. They were trading punches at the start of the tenth round. Gamboa lost a point for excessive holding during the tenth as Sosa was pressing and punching.
