Welterweight prospect Yurik Mamedov stopped Jose Espinoza Jaramillo in round 3 Saturday night at the Gimnasio Municipal Martin Canizalez in Ures, Sonora, Mexico.

Mamedov improves to 13-1, 5 knockouts.

The 30-year-old Mamedov, who is of French descent and was born in Yaroslavl, Russia, had not fought since stopping Eduardo Cordovez in November 2019, winning a regional junior welterweight title in the process.

From the opening bell, Mamedov was the aggressor, working behind a steady jab and following up with right hands and hooks to the body. Espinoza felt the effects of the punches, backing up against the ropes and trying to land his own array of punches that had little effect on Mamedov.

Mamedov continued to connect with several combinations in round 3 that hurt Espinoza. Mamedov followed up, battering Espinoza until Espinoza’s corner saw enough and threw in the towel midway through the round.

“I am a bad man,” said Mamedov, who now lives and trains in Brooklyn, New York. “I apply smart pressure and when I smell fear, I go in for the kill. It is in my blood, to fight for what I love.

“This win is for all of my Yazidi people. I love you all, and we will keep fighting.

Mamedov has now won his last five fights since losing to gatekeeper Marcus Beckford in December 2017.

Jaramillo, who resides in Ocotlan, Mexico, drops to 13-3, 8 KOs. The 36-year-old has now lost two of his last three fights.

Former welterweight contender Brad Solomon defeated veteran Lisandro de los Santos over six one-sided rounds.

The taller Solomon (29-3, 9 KOs), who is originally from Douglasville, Georgia and now lives and trains in Las Vegas, Nevada, rained punches down on de los Santos, who had his moments anytime Solomon fought with his back against the ropes. Even as de los Santos did connect with an occasional hook or cross to hand or body, Solomon was in control throughout much of the fight.

The victory on Saturday was Solomon’s first victory in almost three years. He had lost back-to-back fights to unbeaten Vergil Ortiz, Jr. and Alexis Rocha.

De Los Santos, who resides in Agua Prieto, Mexico, falls to 25-22-1, 11 KOs. The 29-year-old has now lost eight of his last nine bouts.
