As the second week of the 2019 world amateur championship has reached its mid-point, all of the semi-finalists in eight weight classes were defined in today’s quarterfinals.

The story of the day was an encounter between #8 ranked Russians and #1 ranked Cubans, who collided in five weight classes, and Cuba barely retained her dominance, winning 3:2 over the Russian team. Successful efforts of both veteran Andrey Zamkovoy, who at 32 will earn his second WC medal, following 2009 Milano silver, and young gun Gleb Bakshi were upsets of the day, as was a sudden loss of another #1 Cuban Erisandy Savon, who was defeated by little-known Bulgarian Daniil Pantaleev in the heavyweight division.

Arlen Lopez, who was narrowly defeated by Bakshi, was one of three competing 2016 Olympic champions. The other two – flyweight Shakhobidin Zoirov and light heavyweight powerhouse Julio Cesar La Cruz are still in and will compete in quarterfinals.

Both Kazakhstan (6 medals) and Uzbekistan (5 medals) are dominating the ground, while the Russian team (4 medals) and Cuba (three #1-rated fighters in the semifinals) are ready to take part in action. The same cannot be said of the Team USA, which will be represented in semifinals only by blistering Keyshawn Davis. Another American quarterfinalist Ricky Torrez was the only one to be stopped today – by young and hard-punching Uzbek Bakhodir Jalilov.
