The World Boxing Council's Board of Governors has reached a resolution on the light heavyweight division.

They have agreed to sanction a fight between WBC light heavyweight world champion Adonis Stevenson (29-1, 24 KOs) and two-division champion Badou Jack (22-1-2, 13 KOs). The Showtime televised fight will take place on May 19 in Quebec, Canada.

They have also sanctioned a fight for the WBC interim-light heavyweight between Oleksandr Gvozdyk and Mehdi Amar, which takes place on March 17th in New York.  ESPN will televise that bout.

The WBC maintains that the winners of both fights will have to face each other - but it's not clear if they have to face each other next.

When the winners of those fights collide, the bout will have a split percentage of WBC champion 65%, WBC interim champion 35%.

And, the WBC has also ruled that Eleider Alvarez (23-0, 11 KOs) will retain his position as the mandatory challenger.

And Alvarez will get an immediate crack at the winner of the WBC champion vs. WBC interim-champion showdown.

As previously reported on BoxingScene.com, Alvarez will appear in the co-feature to Stevenson vs. Jack. His opponent has yet to be determined.

Stevenson's last mandatory defense dates back to November of 2013, when he faced Tony Bellew in Quebec City.

Alvarez initially became the mandatory challenger for Stevenson by defeating Isaac Chilemba on November 28, 2015. He has won four bouts since - including clashes with Lucian Bute and Jean Pascal - agreeing to give up his mandatory position on two occasions so that Stevenson could have optional defenses against Thomas Williams and Andrejz Fonfara.

There was a final eliminator ordered between Alvarez and Gvozdyk, but Alvarez withdrew prior to the purse bid earlier this month, because he saw no reason to go through with another eliminator after winning three final eliminators in the past - with Pascal, Bute and Chilemba. That forced the WBC to create the interim-title fight.
