World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman likes the idea of Saul "Canelo" Alvarez moving up in weight to challenge WBC, IBF light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev.

This past Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Canelo became the undisputed world champion at super middleweight when he knocked out Caleb Plant to unite the WBC, WBO, IBF, WBA world titles.

Canelo, who fought four fights in twelve months, managed to capture every belt at 168 inside of a year.

The Mexican superstar is not planning to fight again until the month of May, on Cinco De Mayo weekend.

Canelo is already a four division world champion. He made the jump to light heavyweight in 2019, when he knocked out Sergey Kovalev to capture the WBO title.

In the aftermath of that win, Canelo vacated the WBO belt and dropped down to 168.

Beterbiev is scheduled to make a mandatory defense, when he stakes his IBF and WBC titles against Marcus Browne on December 17.

Canelo has several options for the month of May, including a trilogy fight with Gennady Golovkin (should he beat Ryota Murata in December), WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol, Jermall Charlo, and David Benavidez.

In recent weeks, Canelo and his handlers have mentioned Beterviev as a possible future opponent.

Sulaiman would welcome the scenario of Canelo facing Beterbiev - but also warns that there is a lot of danger involved. Beterbiev has stopped all 16 of his opponents inside the distance.

"Yes [we would welcome that fight]. Beterbiev makes a mandatory defense in December and will be open to do anything he wants to do. It would be a tremendous match," Sulaiman told Sky Sports.

"Beterbiev is undefeated, he is a heavy, heavy puncher. He would be a very strong threat to Canelo's legacy. But Canelo wants to keep going further and further so let's see."
