World Boxing Council President Maurcio Sulaiman was very disappointed by the performance last Saturday night from Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

The former WBC middleweight champion entered the ring against his country rival, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, before a sold-out crowd at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

The crowd, which was mostly comprised of Mexican boxing fanatics, were expecting a classic battle between two warriors from their country - trading hard punches in honor of Cinco De Mayo weekend.

But there was no war or even a hint of there being one, not even close.

Chavez Jr. promised fireworks and drama, but instead he was battered for twelve rounds. The fight was a one-sided affair that saw Canelo land hard punches, round after round, to win a one-sided decision. He won every round on all three official scorecards.

Chavez Jr. barely threw any punches in the fight. He even failed to take advantage of key moments when Canelo was trapped against the ropes.

Sulaiman believes the performance by Chavez Jr. has killed his credibility and he doubts the Mexican fighter will be capable of recovering from this very lackluster performance.

"Julio Cesar had absolutely nothing, neither physically or mentally, and the millions that he received [to fight Canelo] should have forced him to fight better, because the people were left with a great disappointment. I do not think he can return to his previous level and I doubt he can continue in boxing without having credibility," Sulaiman told Deportes En Claro.

Having said that, Sulaiman is very excited about the recently announced blockbuster for the fall - as Canelo will challenge IBF, IBO, WBC, WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin on September 16th - which falls on Mexican Independence Day weekend.

"Our champion is Golovkin. Everything that has been done in recent years is to have that fight against Canelo. Let's hope it's worthy of taking place on an important date for Mexicans," Sulaiman said.
