It was not the result light heavyweight Vyacheslav Shabranskyy wanted in his return to the ring.

Shabranskyy fought to a majority-decision draw against Ricardo Luna Thursday night inside The Hangar at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa, California.

One judge scored the bout 78-75 for Shabranskyy, but the other two judges scored the bout 76-76.

Shabranskyy, who is originally from Zhytomyr, Ukraine and now lives and trains in Los Angeles, goes to 21-2-1, 17 knockouts.

Thursday’s fight against Luna marked the return from an over two-year absence for Shabranskyy. In his last bout in September 2019, Shabranskyy won by disqualification over Felix Valera of the Dominican Republic.

The ring-rust was evident from the opening bell for Shabranskyy, whose timing looked off during the first couple of rounds. Luna was able to connect with the occasional hook or cross to the head, but Shabranskyy took the punches well. As the fight progressed, Shabranskyy was the more-effective fighter, outboxing Luna with combinations, but was not able to overcome the slow start.

Shabranskyy, who is managed by Dina Shabranskaya, is now unbeaten in his last three fights since losing by knockout to Sergey Kovalev in November 2017. The vacant WBO title was on the line.

Up until the loss to Kovalev, Shabranskyy was promoted by Golden Boy Promotions.

Luna, who resides in the Mexico City area, goes to 23-8-2, 15 KOs.
