Former WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-4-2) states that he was unable to fully close his mouth when the ninth round was over in his war of wills with Josesito Lopez (29-4-2) at Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.

Ortiz, already lined up for a September pay-per-view fight with WBA 154-pound champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, was taken to a hostpital after the fight.

"Josesito busted my jaw," Ortiz said. "I had my mouth open, and he broke my jaw. I couldn't close my mouth. It happened early in the ninth round I believe. My corner wanted me to continue but I just couldn't."

This was the second consecutive stoppage loss for Ortiz. After he recovers from his jaw injury, he will likely exercise a rematch clause to get a second crack at Lopez.
