UPDATE (5:21PM ET): Vergil Ortiz Jr. made weight on his second attempt, coming in right at the 147-pound welterweight limit

Vergil Ortiz Jr. and Maurice Hooker are nearly set for a hometown throwdown.

The pair of Dallas-area welterweights are due to collide ahead this Saturday from Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas (DAZN, 9:00 p.m. ET/8:00 p.m. locally). A regional welterweight title is at stake, though Ortiz will have to shed some weight in order to be eligible for the strap in their DAZN headliner.

Ortiz (16-0, 16KOs) checked in at 147.6 pounds and will be required to shed 0.6 pounds in order to challenge for the WBO International welterweight title. Hooker weighed right at the 147-pound divisional limit.

The bout marks the first locally based appearance for both boxers since fighting in the area one month apart in 2019. Ortiz enjoyed a true homecoming, headlining an Aug. 2019 show in his hometown of Grand Prairie, Texas, where he stopped former title challenger Antonio Orozco inside of six rounds.

Hooker’s return home wasn’t nearly as kind, having resulted in the lone loss of his professional career. The Dallas native suffered a 6th round stoppage loss to Jose Ramirez in their July 2019 WBC/WBO junior welterweight title unification clash in Arlington, Texas.

Just one round worth of ring time has followed for Hooker, scoring a 1st round knockout of Uriel Perez in Dec. 2019. The bout marked his first fight at welterweight following his 13-month title reign.

Ortiz added two wins since his last local fight. A 5th round stoppage of Brad Solomon in Dec. 2019 capped a four-win campaign (all by knockout) to secure Prospect of the Year honors. The pandemic has been the only thing to slow down Ortiz, who was limited to just one fight in 2020—a 7th round knockout of Samuel Vargas last July at Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California.

The latter win was accompanied by a record-breaking knockout delivered by Seniesa Estrada (19-0, 8KOs), who enters her first career title fight. The East Los Angeles native faces long-reigning WBA strawweight champion Anabel Ortiz (31-3, 4KOs) in a scheduled 10-round chief support.

Ortiz hit the scale at 105.2 pounds. The 34-year old Mexico City native looks to make the 13th defense of a title reign dating back to 2013 as she also fights in the U.S. for the first time in her storied career.

Estrada weighed 104.4 pounds in fighting at a third weight division in as many fights. Just 16 months ago saw her prevail in a long-brewing grudge match with 2012 Olympic Bronze medalist Marlen Esparza, whom Estrada outpointed to claim an interim flyweight title.

In her most recent start, Estrada entered the record books as she knocked out unbeaten but woefully overmatched Miranda Atkins in just seven seconds last July.

Below are the weights for the rest of the DAZN undercard.

Marcelino Lopez (36-2-1, 21KOs), Buenos Aires, Argentina, 140.8 pounds vs. Jairo Lopez (27-11, 18KOs), Apodaca, Mexico, 139.2 pounds—10 rounds, junior welterweight

Tristan Kalkreuth (7-0, 5KOs), Duncanville, Texas, 198 pounds vs. Dustin Long (4-1-2, KOs), Johnson City, Tennessee, 201 pounds—6 rounds cruiserweight.
